Email Settings for Google Gmail and GSuite

1) At Google – Verify IMAP Settings

  1. In your browser, sign in to your Google/Gmail account.
  2. Click the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner and select See all settings.
  3. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tabs. (Note: If you do not see a tab that contains "POP/IMAP," then the IT administrator has not enabled these protocols for this account.)
  4. In the IMAP Access area, ensure that Enable IMAP is selected. 
  5. Click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the screen.

2) At Google – Verify Security Settings

  1. In your Google/Gmail account, click on your profile picture in the upper-right, then click the Manage your Google Account button.
  2. Click the Security tab on the left. 
  3. Ensure that 2-Step Verification is set to ON.

3) In Postbox – Remove Old Passwords (if needed)

If you are new to Postbox, this step shouldn't be needed, but if you've previously set up, or attempted to set up, an account we recommend this quick step to ensure there are no older passwords that are conflicting.

  1. Go to Options (Windows) or Preferences (macOS) > Security > Passwords > Saved Passwords
  2. Delete any passwords that may exist for the account that you are trying to set up

4) In Postbox – Ensure that Cookies are enabled

Navigate to Preferences/Options > Privacy and ensure that the setting Accept cookies from sites is enabled.

5) In Postbox – Set Up Your Account and Verify Settings

To set up a new account, go to the File menu and select New > Mail Account, then enter your credentials and verify the settings below.

To verify an existing account, go to Preferences (macOS) or Options (Windows) > Accounts, then verify the following settings:

Incoming Server

  • Account Type: IMAP
  • Server Name: imap.gmail.com
  • Port: 993
  • User Name: username@gmail.com or username@your_domain.com
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: OAuth2 - Google

Outgoing Server

  • Server Name: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465
  • User Name: username@gmail.com or username@your_domain.com
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: OAuth2- Google
IMPORTANT! - If using 2-Step Verification, please note that Postbox does not support authentication using the YouTube app. When you reach the 2-Step Verification screen click on the Try another way link, then select either text messaging or the Authenticator app.

 

Troubleshooting

If you are having difficulty connecting, please try these steps:

  1. In your Google/Gmail account, click on your profile picture in the upper-right, then click the Manage your Google Account button.
  2. Click the Security tab on the left. 
  3. Check the Recent Security Activity section and verify that it was you who was trying to connect to Google.
  4. If you are using YouTube to Authenticate, try using the Google Authenticator app instead.
