When running macOS Mojave, Postbox 6.1.3 and higher automatically adapts to your Light and Dark Mode preferences, located at macOS > System Preferences > General.
You easily switch between themes (independent of your macOS mode) by adding our new "Theme" button to the Postbox toolbar. Right-click the toolbar and select "Customize..." from the pop-up menu. Then drag and drop the "Theme" icon to the desired location in your toolbar.
The toolbar button will allow you to switch modes with a single click. On macOS Mojave and later, a press-and-hold action will allow you to select from Light, Dark, or Default to follow the macOS setting.
We've also brought Dark Mode to previous versions of macOS, starting with El Capitan 10.11 and later.
Don't think that we've forgotten about our Windows users! A Dark Mode theme will be arriving for Windows in late 2018.
- The theme colors are not user customizable.
- The team experimented a great deal with black vs. white background colors for both the message preview and composition areas and decided to keep them white for the time being.
On the preview side, we've found huge differences on how messages display. In short, we found that far too many messages weren't properly formatted or authored, which caused them to appear broken with dark backgrounds. Additionally, many messages force a white background, which creates a jarring experience as you page through messages with some backgrounds white, and some dark.
On the message composition side, we'll have a bit more flexibility to change things, but we would like to receive more feedback from customers before we make any changes.
- As with any new theme release, the Postbox team will be anxious to hear your feedback. If you have ideas on how the theme should be tuned, please submit a Feature Request.
