Setting up Google / Gmail / GSuite

Postbox and Google/Gmail accounts work perfectly together! Simply follow these steps to verify your settings:

1) At Google – Verify IMAP Settings

  1. In your browser, sign in to your Google/Gmail account.
  2. Click the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner and select Settings.
  3. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  4. In the IMAP Access area, ensure that Enable IMAP is selected.
  5. Click the Save Changes button.

2) At Google – Verify Security Settings

  1. In your Google/Gmail account, click on your profile picture in the upper-right, then click the My Account button
  2. Click Sign-in & Security
  3. If 2-Step Verification is set to OFF, then scroll down to Apps with account access and set Allow less secure apps to OFF.

3) In Postbox – Remove Old Passwords

  1. Go to Options (Windows) or Preferences (macOS) > Security > Passwords > Saved Passwords
  2. Delete any passwords that may exist for the account that you are trying to set up

4) In Postbox - Ensure that Cookies are enabled

Navigate to Preferences/Options > Privacy and ensure that the setting Accept cookies from sites is enabled.

5) In Postbox - Set Up Your Account / Verify Settings

To set up a new account, go to the File menu and select New > Mail Account, then enter your credentials and verify the settings below.

To verify an existing account, go to Preferences (macOS) or Options (Windows) > Accounts, then verify the following settings:

Incoming Server

  • Account Type: IMAP
  • Server Name: imap.gmail.com
  • Port: 993
  • User Name: username@gmail.com or username@your_domain.com
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: OAuth2

Outgoing Server

  • Server Name: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465
  • User Name: username@gmail.com or username@your_domain.com
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: OAuth2

If you get stuck in an authentication loop...

Please note that Postbox's authentication is not compatible with "Google Prompts" that originate from the Gmail app on your phone. To fix this, you can either:

1) Download the Google App on your phone, and use that to generate the Google Prompt, or

2) Disable the Google Prompt and use a voice or text message instead:

  • In your Google/Gmail account, click on your profile picture in the upper-right, then click the My Account button
  • Click Sign-in & Security
  • Click 2-Step Verification, then delete the Google prompt by clicking the trash can icon
