How to Migrate Accounts from Thunderbird

Overview

During the installation process, Postbox should be able to migrate all of your Thunderbird account settings. We highly recommend this migration path over a manual account migration.

But for the power user, these instructions will outline how to manually migrate your email account settings from Thunderbird to Postbox.

Since Postbox is built on the Mozilla platform, Thunderbird settings directly correspond to Postbox settings. Simply copy these settings from Thunderbird, and enter them into the new account wizard in Postbox.

Copy Initial Thunderbird Settings

First we need to copy enough settings from Thunderbird to enter into the Postbox account wizard.

  1. Select Account Settings from the Tools menu, and select Server Settings underneath the account you would like to copy settings from.
  2. Copy the Server Type, Server Name, and User Name.

Run through the Postbox Account Wizard

Next we're going to transfer the settings we noted above in Postbox. Here goes...

  1. Within Postbox, select Account Settings from the Tools menu. Click on the Add Account button in the lower left.
  2. Within the New Account Setup screen, select Other email account, and click the Continue button.
  3. Type Your Name and Email Address for the acccount you want to setup, and click the Continue button.
  4. Select either POP or IMAP, enter your Incoming Server, and click the Continue button.
  5. Enter your Incoming User Name, and click the Continue button.
  6. Give your account a recognizible Account Name like "Work Mail" (you can change this later), click the Continue button, then click the Done button. You should now be at the Account Settings screen.

Mirror Thunderbird Settings with Postbox

  1. For both programs, select Account Settings from the Tools menu, and select Server Settings underneath the accounts you would like to copy settings from. Now, copy the settings from Thunderbird to Postbox for each of the following screens:
    • Copy all settings within theServer Settings screen.
    • Within the Server Settings screen, click on the Advanced button and copy any settings seen here.
    • In Thunderbird, at the bottom of the account list on the left side, select Outgoing Server (SMTP), click on the SMTP server for the account you wish to copy, then click the Edit button. Find the SMTP screen in Postbox, and click the Add button in the upper right. Copy these settings.
    • Optional - repeat this mirroring process for other account settings such as Copies & and Folders and Junk Settings.
  2. Click the OK button to close the Account Settings screens for both programs.

Almost there...

  1. Within Postbox, click on your newly created account in the folder pane, and then click the Get Mail button in the toolbar.
  2. Enter your password in the drop down dialog that appears. Select the Use Password Manager to remember this password checkbox if you would like your password to be entered automatically for you in the future.

That should do it! Enjoy!
